Sonic Acts XIII: Expanded Space

Monday, March 8th, 2010 5:24 pm

The Auscultations of Seven Connor image

The Auscultations of Seven Connor

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 8:59 am

sound is unthinkable without space…
sound is always more than space…
sound and space never exactly coincide…
sound and space are consustantial but never exactly coexistant…

I am outisde the sound which is at the same time inside me…

music rarely happens in space, because music IS space.

Sunday report: Beyond Space

Monday, March 1st, 2010 9:20 pm

Anticipation for the final evening of Sonic Acts 2010 was running high. Considering the location one should not be surprised. The planetarium at the Artis Zoo is (sadly) seldom used for musical performances so the event pulled a diverse crowd, so much so that it the evening was sold out in advance. What is it [...]

Anthony McCall: Line Describing a Cone image

Anthony McCall: Line Describing a Cone

Monday, March 1st, 2010 8:57 pm

Reading the program of Sonic Acts I got intrigued about this 30min, B&W, silent film. Made in 1973, it is the first of McCall´s ’solid light’ film series, an exploration on the sculptural qualities of light, using simple 16mm projections. He developed these series until the late 70s, only re-starting this practice more than twenty years later, this time using digital tools. This film is now a legendary example within the field of expanded cinema.

UPIC Diffusion Session #22

Monday, March 1st, 2010 7:59 pm

UPIC (acronym of Unité Polyagogique Informatique du CEMAMu) is a ‘graphic input’ musical composition tool, devised by the composer Iannis Xenakis in the 70s. He used the system to compose a couple of works, but also wanted to make of it an ‘universal’ interface. In Xenakis words: “Anybody, even myself or you, or children, can draw lines or graphics with an electromagnetic ballpoint, and they are transformed by computer directly into sound … “

Sonic Acts XIII – Dag 4 – Gardeners of the Future | Beyond Space

Monday, March 1st, 2010 2:16 pm

Sven Schlijper | Kindamuzik

“Opening our ears so much that we forget we’re not speaking at all.” Hildegard Westerkamp.

Saturday, February 27th, 2010 5:15 pm

Barry Truax : Soundscape Composition

Saturday, February 27th, 2010 4:42 pm

Barry Truax opened the session at De Balie on Saturday, a whole day devoted specially to soundscape, phonography and the exploration of the acoustic qualities of our environment.

Truax´s career has been combining academic computer and electroacoustic music with social and ecological concerns. Since the 70s, as part of the World Soundscape Project and at the Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, he has been developing academic and artistically the fields of music composition with environmental sounds and acoustic ecology.

Fred Worden After Hours in the Cerebral Kitchen

Saturday, February 27th, 2010 4:34 pm

Our very first contact with Sonic Acts the Thursday afthernoon, was with Fred Worden movie Fred Worden 1859. Upon the description “Built out of a 30-frame clip of a lens flare. LSD is illegal, 1859 is not”, we experience the beggining of a lisergical tryp, directly comunicated with the Friday live-cinema Bruce McClure show. Indeed, [...]

Sonic Acts-Day1

Saturday, February 27th, 2010 5:49 am

Opening performance
performance | Brandon LaBelle – Q&A
Deep Spaces | Paradiso
Materia Obscura、Still in Cosmos、Monolake Live Surround這三件作品。

Thursday report: Deep Spaces @ Paradiso

Friday, February 26th, 2010 10:57 pm

As titles go, Deep Spaces is brilliantly evocative. Full of promises and mysteries to come. Kicking off the musical program is the collaboration between Keith Rowe, Kjell Bjørgeengen and the musical duo Streifenjunko. To put it bluntly: this is what Sonic Acts is all about. Collaboration…possibilities…strange beauty. Bringing the outer limits just a bit closer [...]

Sonic Acts 2010: On the Poetics of Hybrid Space

Friday, February 26th, 2010 10:19 pm

I just visited an interesting panel on the Sonic Acts 2010 Conference called The Poetics of Hybrid Space.
When over here at The Mobile City we talk about Hybrid Space, we usually refer to the work of Adriana de Souza e Silva who in several articles has convincingly argued against the dichotomy between physical or [...]

The history of human medial experience in a nutshell: 300 generations ago writing was developed. 35 generations ago: printing. Photography 5. Wireless technologies not even one.

Welke rol spelen technologische ontwikkelingen hierin? [...]

Exhibition NIMK

Thursday, February 25th, 2010 10:40 pm

NIMK. I’m late. Long corridor. Elevator. Empty exhibition space. Lost visitors. One drags a skateboard along. Blink’s beam traps him. Gilje’s space. It is huge. Bigger than the room. A humming void pulsates, expands, collapses. Lightning strikes. Retinal reset.
Next door Kirkegaard. A spotlight hits. The sound captured white. Sand? Bow your head. Inside the smallest [...]
