Creative Dimensions of Space
The STEIM Jamboree sessions are something in between a conference, expert meeting and a salon that deal with specific themes. For this edition we take the opportunity to work with Sonic Acts Festival to host two sessions on aspects of space that we are particularly interested in. The whole event is limited to 30 participants to encourage in-depth discussions.
Session 1: STEIM Sonic Acts Residency
Hans W. Koch: Two Rooms Flipped – sound installation for two remote spaces, flipped
Yutaka Makino: Conflux – live performance for sound, light and fog
Through the collaboration with Sonic Acts XIII we have invited two artists to work at STEIM for 3 weeks to create new art work. Hans W. Koch and Yutaka Makino both cross seamlessly between performance, composition, installation and technology. They will talk about the process of their residency as well as touching upon their general practice as interdisciplinary artists. Both of their work will be shown every day during the festival period of Feb 26 – 28.
Session 2: Organized Spaces
Cafe Oto / London
Birdcage / Stockholm, Amsterdam, Beijing
Worm / Rotterdam
Whether it’s paying high rent in the city or facing fund cuts from the government, organizing a “venue” for experimental arts is always a struggle. In an ever changing economical and cultural (or are they the same?) landscape how can you sustain a space that presents non-mainstream work but is also accessible to the wider public? Is this a highly local matter or are there models that can be implemented internationally? Many musicians including Otomo Yoshihide and Evan Parker has named Cafe Oto in London as their favorite venue in the world. Birdcage has traveled to 3 cities asking local artists to make work that is highly localized. And Worm in Rotterdam is always cool, with their activity range from dance parties to field recording workshops and subversive social networking apps. We invite the master minds behind these 3 organizations to talk about their spaces and discuss some of the issues they face.
