Fred Worden After Hours in the Cerebral Kitchen

Our very first contact with Sonic Acts the Thursday afthernoon, was with Fred Worden movie Fred Worden 1859. Upon the description “Built out of a 30-frame clip of a lens flare. LSD is illegal, 1859 is not”, we experience the beggining of a lisergical tryp, directly comunicated with the Friday live-cinema Bruce McClure show. Indeed, Fred Worden cuoted today this piece to introduce his talking. His lecture After hours in the cerebral kitchen, was a basic explanation of the complex working of his films.  Acording with his lecture at Sonic Acts, the secret ingredient of every of his films is the black part aof the film between all the images. Today he spoke about Phi motion, based in Gestalt´s Maas Wertheimer Theories (a succession of still images produces a disembodied perception of motion).

In the darkness that follow the images, WHEN WORLDS COLLUDE (2008, 13min.) play with the spatial perception of movement and its “narrative” sense. F. Worden maintain a film lenguage based on the material of the film itself, although he work in DV since 2004. The title could be based in the Philip Wylie & Edwin Balmer 1933 novel Ehen Worlds Collude, and also in the homonym 1951 film. The mean diference between those version and Fred Worden one, is than 2008 version dont speak about interplanetary crash, but about the images crash.

Fred Worden has passed the last 30 years experimenting with cinema, nowdays works at Department of Visual Arts at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
